As a naturopath who specializes in hormones I frequently work with women who have common hormone imbalances so I would like to ask you?  “Do you know your thyroid health story? Are you experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism such as fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depression, and more?” In this blog, I am going to share with you my own personal thyroid story and hope that helps you with your health journey.

My thyroid health story

I had all the classic symptoms, stress mum early 30’s, three kids, crazy work schedule, my hair was falling out, my joints ached, I had no energy and my weight was out of control.  The GP would run all the usual tests and tell me everything was normal, except my blood sugar and cholesterol were high, I would get the usual diet and lifestyle lecture & leave feeling worse than when I arrived.

Despite my doctor’s reassurance that I was fine, I felt sick, then I suddenly developed Shingles as a nurse I knew that shingles were a sign my immune system was under stress.  So I told my doctor he needed to look into my health further and find out why I was getting shingles as my immune system was obviously under stress and I asked for further tests. I found I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.  This means that my body has made anti-bodies that are slowly destroying my Thyroid Gland.  This is an auto-immune condition and if detected early can prevent the destruction of your Thyroid Gland.  I was very fortunate because my Thyroid Gland has remained functional and I have been able to reduce my anti-body levels to prevent further damage to my Thyroid Gland.

So why does your doctor say that everything is normal when you have blood tests to check your thyroid function, because the common test used is TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and it will usually remain within normal limits unless there are significant changes to T3 (Triiodothyronine) or T4 (Thyroxine) the main hormones produced by the Thyroid Gland. T3 controls your metabolism and is converted to T4 so it is very important that this process can happen efficiently, as a naturopath we like to consider how effectively you can convert T3 to T4 using a blood test Reverse T3 to measure this, this gives us further information, we also test for anti-thyroid anti-bodies and monitor them, to prevent further damage to your thyroid gland and prescribe supplements and herbs to promote the healthy function of the Thyroid Gland.

Why is this also so important? You Thyroid Gland is one of the most important glands in your body it controls many of your body’s metabolic processes.  If it is not working properly you are likely to experience increase changes in mood, weight gain, metabolic changes increased cholesterol and high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, hair loss, fatigue, joint, and muscle aches, and pains.  It should also be noted if you are in the early stages of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis you are likely to swing between overactive and underactive Thyroid symptoms.

These symptoms are debilitating for people they cause huge changes in people’s lives and can lead to loss of employment, relationship breakdown, and serious illnesses.  I would like to reassure you that Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is a treatable autoimmune condition and responds well to naturopathy, despite there being a level of complacency for the condition and the life-changing effects on the individual in mainstream medicine.
