As a naturopath, I am always interested in encouraging the inclusion of nutrient-dense foods into your everyday diet.  One food is dark chocolate 70 -85% cocoa, did you know that chocolate can actually help with weight loss? We all know about the benefits of dark chocolate, but did you also know that there are many other types of chocolates that provide significant health benefits?

Chocolate is a great source of antioxidants, the best type of chocolate to eat that has the most about of antioxidants in dark chocolate is 70 – 85% cocoa. Chocolate is made from the cacao bean that is grown on a cacao tree in tropical areas of the world. Chocolate is nutrient-dense so is packed full of vitamins and minerals.

It can help you lose weight by increasing your metabolism and reducing cravings for sugar. Did you know that chocolate contains lots of plant-based monounsaturated fatty acids, these will help you to burn calories and fat by boosting your metabolism. Monounsaturated fatty acids also help to reduce cravings for salt and sugar.  So if you are keen on good quality chocolate the news is all good for you this Easter.

It’s full of fiber, which helps keep you feeling fuller longer. This is truly amazing and hard to believe, however it is true. Good quality chocolate is a very good source of fibre, so bring on the chocolate! One hundred grams of good quality chocolate contains 11 gms of fibre per serving, which is amazing and is packed full of other nutrients also.

Good quality dark chocolate is also rich in nutrients that naturopaths regularly prescribe as supplements these include magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and selenium. Selenium is particularly important for helping with insulin receptor sensitivity. Magnesium is widely used throughout the body and also helps with muscles, cardiac health, and supports a healthy nervous system, having been shown to reduce stress levels and improve sleep quality.  Get your fill of magnesium!

Eating chocolate may actually boost your mood! Research suggests that eating chocolate also helps to release the feel-good endorphins in our brain and generally helps to improve mood. So it appears there are very few negatives to eating chocolate. So this Easter if you are going to indulge in chocolate as many of us will why not try to make it the good quality dark chocolate and also get the health benefits associated.
