As a naturopath I spend a lot of time treating mood disorders. Everyone experiences anxiety at some point in their lives, but when it becomes chronic and excessive, it can be debilitating. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in Australia 2.71 million people or 1. 7 Australians are currently living with an anxiety disorder.
People who suffer from anxiety often experience symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, insomnia or sleep disturbances, irritability and difficulty concentrating.
Many of these signs are caused by imbalances in neurotransmitters like serotonin – a chemical messenger that helps regulate moods among other things.
Here is a list of 9 foods that help with anxiety:
1. Brazil Nuts
Contain high amounts of selenium you can overdose on selenium the limit is 400 mcg per day so don’t have more than 3 or 4 per day. They also contain Vitamin E, both selenium and vitamin E are powerful antioxidants that help protect our cells from damage, vitamin E also helps with depression.
2. Oily fish
Salmon is the most common form of oily fish, include it in your diet once or twice a week to help with increasing omega 3 fatty acids in your diet to increase your EPA and DHA this has been shown to help reduce the risk of mood disorders in research studies.
